A Horrific Visit to Apple's Georgetown Store

A Horrific Visit to Apple's Georgetown Store

A close approximation to the conversation I had at Apple's Gtown store yesterday (September 2011).  If you don't understand why I should be annoyed, then you might want to start reading over here.

Me: The new back/forward gesture behavior for web pages…does it work in browsers others than Safari?

[This is f'n cool.]

Apple Store "Specialist" #1: I don't know. Let me ask somebody else.

[tick tock]

ASS #1: OK, so it's only for Safari right now.

[Fine. Only including this bit of the visit because it's an important part of the whole store experience—nothing to knock on its own.]

Me: Is it possible to have both a magic trackpad and a magic mouse connected to the same iMac at the same time?

ASS #2: Yes…I mean no…I don't think so…I don't know. No, because that would mean two things would be trying to control the cursor.

TA: Hmmm.  The reason I ask is because…

ASS #2: I think you'd like the track pad better. You can use a stylus on it if you want.

TA: OK. So, do you have a machine here with a solid state drive installed?

ASS #2: Hmm…this one has a Super Drive.

TA: That's not really what I'm…Do you know what an SSD is?

ASS #2: No. Let me check something.

[ASS #2 steps to the iMac and Google's "solid state drive iMac".]

TA: OK, it's…[blah blah]…it's faster, but it's a lot more expensive and you don't get as much space for the money.

ASS #2: That's stupid.

TA: Sure. So, could you ask someone if you have one here that I could test?

[tick tock]

ASS #3: We only have those online.

[tarek exits stage right.]
